Explore Lauterbrunnen
Middle-earth in the Lauterbrunnen valley –
the origin of the Sisters of Rivendell
On a trip through Europe at the age of 19, J.R.R. Tolkien hiked through the Lauterbrunnen valley. Among the sheer rock walls, mystical waterfalls, and surrounded by insurmountable peaks, he found the inspiration for the landscapes of Lord of the Rings. On a hike through the Lauterbrunnen valley, fans of Middle-earth often feel transported to the film locations of Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien was especially taken with Celebdil, the Silvertine in the Misty Mountains. In reality, this is the Silberhorn (Silverhorn) a satellite peak of the Jungfrau. Tolkien probably saw the Mines of Moria (the tunnel to the Jungfraujoch which was under construction at the time) with his own eyes before he began his dangerous journey across the snow-covered mountains with his companions and a guide.
Here you can find the complete story of the Hobbits in the Lauterbrunnen valley:
Lauterbrunnen has inspired artists to create their works time and again through the stories of Tolkien. The song “Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin is one of these works and with its mystical mood it fits perfectly to a holiday in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
