Lauterbrunnen

THE HISTORY OF LAUTERBRUNNEN

In 1240, a letter referred to Lauterbrunnen as “in claro fonte” (“clear spring”). When the scattered settlement was named, it was surely for the more than seventy waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley (“lauter Brunnen” – “many springs” or possibly “loud streams”). In the 14th century, the Walser village of Lauterbrunnen was the main colony of Lötscher settlements in the “Oberland” (uplands region).
